Infection Control Training: Co. Limerick

Allied Healthcare Skillnet will be holding an Infection Control
Training Day on Thursday the 26th of March,
in Co. Limerick –
(venue is subject to confirmation). The training day will
commence at 9.00am and conclude at 5.00pm.
This course is tailored to meet the criteria set down by HIQA and
HSE guidelines on infection control. The training will be delivered
by for the day
is “Mary Daly and Associates”, and the aims of the course are to
ensure that trainees understand:
1. Standard precautions in a healthcare setting
2. The types of infection and the chain of infection
3. The importance of preventing the spread of infection
4. ‘Best Practice’ hand hygiene
5. How to handle body, chemical and general spillages
6. The importance of effective use of Personal Protective
Equipment
7. Waste Management and Linen Management Procedures
8. Management of Workplace Equipment
The following areas will be covered:
1. Personal and Hand Hygiene
2. The Working Environment
3. Waste Management
4. Management of Body and Chemical Spillages
5. Personal Protective Equipment
6. Linen Management
7. Management of Workplace Equipment
The
programme has been designed to provide trainees of all levels in a
healthcare setting with the essential skills they need to identify
and deal
with the everyday general and very specific infection control issues
in a healthcare setting.
The fee for this training day for Skillnet Members is €75 per
person, or €50 per person (for four or more trainees from a single
nursing home).

Infection Control Training: Co. Limerick

Allied Healthcare Skillnet will be holding a three-day course in Co.
Limerick (venue to be confirmed) entitled “Basic Healthcare
Training”
starting on March 24th , with the second day scheduled
for April 2nd, and the final day on April the 9th.
Start Finish Times: 9.30am to 5.00pm.
The aims of this course are to help care assistants learn about
three key areas in care:
1: Infection Control
2: Patient Handling
3: Basic Life Support.
Day 1: Infection Control
This

The programme has been designed to provide trainees of all levels in

deal with the everyday general and very specific infection control issues
in a healthcare setting.
Day 2: Patient Handling
Day 2 focuses on providing customised Patient Handling Training,
tailored to meet the needs of nursing homes.
The course content meets criteria for Manual Handling as determined
by the Health and Safety Authority.
The course covers the following topics:
Day 3: Basic Life Support
Heart
Saver Automated External Defibrillator Training and CPR/Choking
Assist Training. Successful completion will result in Irish
Heart Foundation Certification – Valid for 2 years.
The
fee for this 3 day training course for Skillnet Members is €200 per
person.

Spring/Summer Schedule of Courses for 2009. We hope to provide
innovative courses of high quality, delivered at a local level. Please

FETAC Level 5 – Healthcare Support Courses
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are currently looking to facilitate three such courses around the
country in 2009, to accompany the 4 courses that we currently offer
in Cork City,
Waterford, Limerick and Tipperary. The areas that we are looking to
set up courses in are (based on volume of requests from members):
Waterford City/Surrounding Area, East Cork, & Kerry
If your nursing home is interested in sending staff on such courses,
please let us know as soon as you can as places are offered on a
first-come,
first-served basis. The fee for the full 8 module course for Allied
Healthcare Skillnet members is €300. Fee for non-members = €3,000
There
may be a possibility, subject to further funding, for the running of
other FETAC Level 5 courses in other areas.
If you are interested in a FETAC Level 5 course being facilitated in
your area please let us know.

course which will help upgrade research skills, entitled “Searching
the
Literature using PubMed” – Milford Care Centre – 23/03/09
Course
Overview
This course is designed for health care professionals who are keen
to develop their search skills to assist them with further study,
research and
to find evidence to inform and support clinical practice PubMed is
the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s search system for health
information and
is the free version of MEDLINE. It covers the fields of medicine,
nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and other areas in the life sciences
and includes
citations dating back to the 1950’s. Finding evidence which informs
and supports decision-making in clinical practice is an importance
skill when
caring for patients and their families.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After
attending this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the key principles in carrying out a search such as how
to plan
a literature search and
to
identify appropriate keywords
·
Ability to search
PubMed
using keywords and thesaurus subjects
and to understand the difference between them

Understand how to limit and broaden results when necessary

modify your search, set

activities – Review.

of completed training activities that were conducted in 2008.
This report will outline summary findings from the evaluations we
conducted with trainees who completed our courses in 2009.

locate courses in appropriate geographical locations.
